It's written by the guys at 37 signals, who have already experienced a great deal of success with a small company that is producing products that are simple and specific.
I truly believe that the emergence of this DIY (Do It Yourself) economy is going to have a tremendous impact on society as a whole. It will greatly increase the distribution of wealth in society by lowering the barriers to entry for entrepreneurs. This is a very good thing as it will lead to more innovation and it will reward those at the heart of the innovation rather than their bosses.
This style of work requires a great deal of perseverance, but the rewards can be fantastic. Imagine if you will an understanding in society that says all you have to do to make tons of money is to start your own business on the side. This would be similar to the previous understanding that in order to make tons of money you needed to go to law school or medical school. You would study for years and years but you would be rewarded on the other end. Well in this situation there is nothing that says you have to study for years and years. And you don't have to be "accepted" to a good program to do it. If the vast majority of the population begins exploring the side busines then we will see so much innovation, and people will be too busy starting businesses to get into trouble. Plus why would you risk getting into trouble to make money if you could make money with a side business.
Admittedly this is far-fetched. Especially considering that the majority of these side businesses are for software because software can be developed after work in your living room, and most people are no where expert enough in software to start a side business. Still there is an interesting pattern here that will likely develop further and begin to have effects like these.
