Web 2.0
I'm sure there are quite a few people out there who have never heard the term Web 2.0, which is being tossed around a lot in certain tech circles now-a-days. For a while now there has been a debate about what it actually means and recently is has come under fire for being an over-hyped term with no substance to it.
Well I just thought I would put my two cents into the discussion. First of all I think that the term Web 2.0 is a valid one. For me it simply signifies a grouping of ideas and technologies that have come of age recently. Many of these things have been around for years in one form or another (or in the same form), but have not reached a critical mass until recently.
Web 2.0 for me can be summed up in one word: Interactivity
RSS, XML, Ajax, Blogs, Wikis, Tagging, APIs, Mobile Technology, BroadBand, General Javascript and Flash, etc etc.
All of these things have increased the interactivity of the web as a whole. Blogs, Wikis, and Tagging have created a "Read/Write" web that allows people to interact with each other in a user to user fashion. Javascript, Flash, Broadband, and Mobile Technologies have increasing the interaction between the user and the client side of web-based software. Ajax has become particulary useful for increasing the interaction between the client and server sides of web-based software. RSS, XML, APIs, etc. have all been instrumental at increasing the interaction between various independent pieces of software, adding, deleting, exchanging, and manipulating information. And there's more than just these examples.
The Web 2.0 simply summarizes this evolution to a platform that fascilitates and enhances user to user, user to software, software front end to back end, and software to software interactions.
These enhancements have also begun to expose a few other catch phrases like the social networking and the long-tail among others.
Just my two cents on the subject. I feel like we had the same debate five years ago about dot-coms and the Internet as a whole. Back then everyone was saying how the internet and the dot-com businesses were going to change everything. How X, Y, and Z, were going to take over and would completely eliminate A, B, and C. Well they were wrong. A is still around, Y died off, C completely changed, B and Z merged, and X is the king of them all. Well that's happening again. Maybe not as fundamentally as the first time around, but it's going to be interesting nonetheless. Everything is going to change again, just not in the ways that we necessarily predict.
