One Entrepreneur's Success

So, I just came across an article on RollingStone.com that talks about a college friend of mine and fellow entrepreneur that has already found a great deal of success creating his own line of clothing, Trovata. His story is interesting because it is a great example of how success can be achieved, but not without a little luck, a lot of skill and the very best timing. Oh, and it doesn't hurt to know people in the right places.

Passion and Timing (with some help from your friends)
Timing and Passion go hand in hand. John (my friend) was always passionate about starting a line of clothing, so he was always looking for his opportunity. This is the key fact that makes timing possible. With John on the look out for his opportunity he jumped at his chance when the son of the CEO of Abercrombie was in the freshman class during our Sophomore year. They became friends (naturally, not just because of the opportunity) and John used the connection to get an internship with Abercrombie.

Now there is a significant amount of luck and timing that come into play when you befriend the son of a powerful person in the very industry you are interested in, but it takes the right person to truly achieve something from this luck. This is where the skill comes into play

Run With It
John didn't just ride the wave of fortune with the one internship, he used the internship as an opportunity to spread the word about his ideas. He negotiated with the CEO to use Abercrombie's overseas production channels to produce the first line of clothing and the line has been a success since it hit the market.


Just thought that this was a nice, neat little entrepreneurial story. I would imagine that most entrepreneurial efforts follow a similar course. Hopefully mine will as well some day.
