The Dating Scene - A Look At Networking

Ok, most of us have been on the dating scene at one point or another. You go out to a bar night after night, keeping an eye out for that one person who you think you're going to connect with. You don't really know what you're looking for, just that it'll probably feel right when it happens.

So you go out night after night, meeting lots of people who you have no connection with. Maybe every now and then you meet someone who has potential. Maybe you end up going home with such a person for a one night stand, maybe even end up dating them for a while, but it quickly becomes evident that it's just not quite right.

This continues for god knows how long. So long, in fact, that you stop caring. Then one night your friends drag you out again and you go just for the hell of it because its one of your favorite bars. You don't bother to get dressed up for it, you're just going to have a good time. When you get there you order a drink and just kind of chill. You're not on the prowl, you're just enjoying the scene.

And that's when you meet her.

It's uncanny.

It's like the scene at the end of Shawshank Redemption where Red is up for probation and finally comes straight, because he no longer cares. He's not faking it, he's not trying too hard, and fate intervenes at the right time...

Well networking is the same way. I don't care if you're looking for a business partner, vc, angel investor, or what, it seems to happen the same way every time (or at least in my limited experience this is true).

Last night it may have happened to me. I'm still in the zone wondering if this is going to amount to the business equivalent of a couple of dates or if it is going to be that business match made in heaven, but it feels like its got a hell of a lot of promise.
